Lomi Lomi Massage
Get A Taste of The Islands In Dripping Springs With Lomi Lomi! Aloha!
What is Lomi Lomi???
Native to the Hawaiian Islands, Lomi Lomi massage is a form of full body massage that is unlike any other massage modality. As a client receiving a Lomi Lomi massage, the main difference you will notice is that it is performed on your entire body at once. Unlike most other massages where the therapist uncovers and treats one body region at a time, in Lomi Lomi the therapist will use long flowing strokes that go from head to toe in a continuous, rhythmic movement massaging both the top and the underside of your body, making the massage very much like a dance.
Lomi Lomi Massage Treats the Mind And Body
Lomi Lomi is an incredibly restorative modality of massage, combining relief of both muscle and mental stress and tension. The ancient Hawaiian shaman believed in a strong mind-body connection and understood that muscle tension and mental stress were highly related. On the physical level, stress and tension are relieved, blood and lymph flow assisted and the elimination of wastes and toxins stimulated. Many recipients experience restored clarity of mind, emotional release, and a renewed sense of peace within themselves. This can be a very meditative and sensory experience, as the practitioner combines touch, sound and rhythm to soothe and relax the client. In this way, one can simultaneously experience the sensation of both escaping and coming home; you are getting away from the world and coming home to the body and mind! In order to maximize the full benefits of Lomi Lomi, sessions are longer in length, either 60 or 80 minutes (preferably 80 minutes).
A Sacred Dance
Dancework or hula movements, combined with the breathwork of the practitioner are also important and integral aspects of Lomi Lomi. The movements are all important to assisting the energy flow both within the practitioner and recipient and helps keep the energy at a high level. This combined with breathing techniques by the therapist are also important in assisting the flow of energy. The sharing of the breath is an old Hawaiian custom and greatly enhances this important energy flow. As a former professional dancer, this modality strongly resonates with Rebecca, our in-house practitioner.
Understanding Lomi Lomi Draping
The unique underbody massage strokes can be performed because the Lomi Lomi massage is done on a massage table with no top or bottom sheets. Draping is very minimal. Typically, you are draped with a small towel just to cover the pubic region. While resting on the back, women may be offered a modest breast covering. However, in traditional Lomi Lomi no breast covering is used. While the breasts are not massaged, the sternum (between the breasts) is massaged along with the entire side of the body. Some of these techniques cannot be performed with breast draping. While face down, the buttocks are minimally covered to protect modesty. This minimal draping enables the therapist to slide their hands and arms under and around your body using massage techniques unique to this form of therapy. It should be stressed that the room is a safe, loving space and you are always treated like a revered and beloved member of the family.
The Seven Principles of Lomi Lomi
At the core of the Hawaiian Shamanic beliefs are seven sacred principles and those principles are at the core of Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage. They are:
IKE (pronounced E’-kay): The world is what you think it is.
KALA: There are no limits.
MAKIA: Energy flows where attention goes.
MANAWA (man-NAV-a): Now is the moment of power.
ALOHA: To love is to be happy with.
MANA: All power comes from within.
PONO: Effectiveness is the measure of truth.
By integrating these into your everyday life, you can fully understand the importance and value of Lomi Lomi!
